I’m going to get this out of the way first - I do not like 99% of reality TV. I’ve never watched Survivor, I have no clue what The Hills is all about, and I don’t know anything about the Kardashians. When I heard about the latest round of stunt casting on How I Met Your Mother for this week’s episode, “Benefits”, I admit, I rolled my eyes. Once the episode had ended, I was elated that reality “stars” Kim Kardashian, Spencer Pratt, Heidi Montag and Kendra Wilkinson were relegated to the talking cover of Marshall’s tabloid magazine.
Here are my picks for episode highlights:
1 - Ted referring to Robin as “Ogre from Revenge of the Nerds.”
2 - Marshall stating, “Nobody likes to ‘read a magazine’ at work.”
3 - Barney’s extreme discomfort with Robin and Ted’s arrangement, which leads to the smashing of many televisions.
4 - Ted telling Barney that “Peace was achieved - repeatedly.”
5 - The continuation of Robin and Ted’s military inside joke, adding “Private Thing” to the ranks.
6 - After Barney admits to “reading a magazine” at work all the time, he asks “Reading a magazine means masturbating, right?”
7 - Barney going to Lily’s class for “Feelings Hour”, sitting in the big chair, holding Feelie the Share Bear, spilling his heart out to the kids about Robin. Cut to the scene of him at work, and he still has Feelie. Classic!
8 - Barney telling Robin that he loves her, and she doesn’t catch on.
I have to say, Barney pining for Robin has added a new dimension to the show and his character, and I approve of both.
Also, did anyone else notice Alyson Hannigan’s face has started to fill out? How long before Cobie Smulders starts to show some physical changes?
If you’d like a refresher on “Benefits”, here’s the full episode recap from CBS.com :
Robin and Ted navigate being exes who are now roommates and discover they get along better when they’re sleeping together as “friends with benefits”. Barney is trouble by the news and has a hard time dealing with his emotions. In an effort to reduce Ted and Robin’s roommate conflicts and stop them from sleeping together, Barney helps out around the apartment, leading Ted to suspect something is up and confront Barney about his feelings towards Robin. Also, the bathroom situation at Marshall’s work is super-stressful, and as a result he has trouble doing certain business there.
